OUR ISLAND

LEFKADA
Lefkada differs from all the Ionian islands as it is accessible easily by a pontoon bridge that opens every hour to allow local boats through. Lefkada owes its name to the steep white cliffs on its southermost cape, where legend says the poetess Sappho took her own life because of her thwarted love for Phaon. The Leleges, the first inhabitants of Lefkas, were defeated by the Cephalonians and Laertes, the father of Odysseus. Many archaeologists identify the island with Ulysses' Ithaki, mentioned by Homer. Although there are plenty of legendary facts, the historical information from the works of Homer is very significant, a fact corroborated by archaeological excavations. The German historian and archaeologist Dorpfeld supports this theory and situates the palace of Ulysses on the eastern part of the island, in the current position of Nidri.

NYDRI
The place where Onassis went, for fun when he was on holidaying on Skorpios. The peop;e of Nidri have erected a statue in his honour on the harbour. Lefkada combines natural beauty and a breathtaking view of the small islands of Skorpios, Madouri and Meganisi scattered about the dark blue sea, with all the comforts of a well organized tourist site. It has a large number of taverns, restaurants, bars and discos which make for an exciting night life. But even when it is teeming with tourists it still retains its local color and Greek hospitality. The supervised beaches at Nydri offer sea sports for both young and old. Nidri water sports is right next to TOMS RESTAURANT and is highly recommended for ringos, the flying fish and para gliding. When you e mail Kaye and Rod ask Kaye about her experience on the Ringos. When you head down to the beaches and harbour away fom the bustle of the main street you enter paradise.

KATHISMA SUNSET

KATHISMA
The sands at KATHISMA are some of the most popular on Lefkas, soft white sand for over a kilometre. However there is not much shade but has cool caves to explore.

VASILIKI
The islands main watersport resort is VASILIKI Many windsurfers take advantage of the bay which,is mostly calm in the mornings and windy in the afternoons. The quaint quayside is packed with tavernas and shops but the beach is stony and rough. VASILIKI is ideal for surfers as it is not more than three or four deep for many metres out to sea.

PAPANICOLIS CAVE
(MEGANISI)
Meganisi, just across the bay from TOM'S RESTAURANT is where the cave of PAPANICOLIS lies, which in 1940 during world war II was used as a hideout by Navigator latridis of the legendary submarine Papanicoli. If you take one of the many boat trips around the island you are able to swim in the cool waters of the cave.

RACHI
The village of RACHI is about a 45 minute walk from Nidri, but well worth it for the sight of the waterfall, orchards and olive groves. The name RACHI means 'ridge' and it is easy to see why it was given to this village perched on top of a rock providing wonderful views.

PERIGIALI
A short walk from Nidri is PERIGIALI which has a lovely beach,it is used by many visitors from Nidri. PERIGIALI is quiet and peaceful, has crystal clear water and is ideal for snorkeling. A peaceful place to relax and watch the world go by.
